New Year's Eve, now with extra sawdust

Lots of bandsaw action today, as we cut all the frames, the apron cheeks (more on these later), two layers of transom, and the center-plate case sides out of marine plywood. This is 12mm okume marine plywood, mind you, at about $200 a sheet, so the first two pictures represent, oh, about $1000 worth of plywood. From the stem back to about frame 5:

...and from frame 5 aft to the transom:

Oh, and we haven't used any of it yet, but we promised pictures of $400 worth of mahogany and Douglas fir. The longest board on the floor is about 16', the longest standing board is about 8'. For the mathematically impaired, there are eight boards in total - and two of those, the cheap cedar filler, were about $6 each. The others were, well, rather more.

As you can see, $400 doesn't buy that much wood. Buster mentioned how when he was a kid you could build the first floor of a house for $400!

oy. looking forward (still) to my opportunity to drool on your plans. perhaps in the coming week.

went to the wood store the other day and got a peek at how pricey this stuff can be. really neat though. makes me nostalgaic for my mahogany pile; we decomissioned a large wooden boat at a certain point and at one point i actually had the bar from that boat... in the basement of chateau 240. looking forward to the plans, and the 'shilling.'

is this in honour of peter shilling?

I think it must have something to do with Peter Shilling. I've gotta track that song down, I always liked it. Or did he spell his name with a "c"? I seem to think he was German, but I'm too busy to Google him.

So, ah, whatever happened to all that mahogany, anyway? If it's still in the dreaded basement at Tara's, we might could do some artful recycling.

I'm heading out tonight (Tuesday) - if you happen to read this, feel free to give me a call and you can join in. I leave right after work (1600h). Cheers! - C.

Oh, and in re: "when he was a kid you could build the first floor of a house for $400" -- not out of mahogany you couldn't! ;-)

Meant to say, yes, Schilling.
